20,000 leagues of creativity

Just a quick post to show off a new artwork I completed today inspired by Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, after noticing it was Verne’s 183rd birthday yesterday.

Happy birthday Jules :)

10 steps to great gig posters & flyer design

Live gigs are pretty much essential in getting people to notice your band, and a key factor in how successful a gig will be is the promotion work you put in leading up to the event.

Posters and fliers, whether distributed offline (in the town, in pubs etc) or online (on your website, on Facebook invites etc), are a key promotional tool.

The idea is to create a flier that works: clear, informative and easy to read text, with interesting and eye-catching graphics.

Here are my top ten tips…

  1. Spend some time planning the wording. Make sure you highlight the selling points of the gig e.g. is there anything special about the lineup or venue?
  2. Think about the information fans and gig goers are seeking from your flyer e.g. venue address, start time, admittance.
  3. People love the word FREE, so if you’re not charging for the gig, make sure it’s very clear!
  4. Create some alternative posters/fliers/banners. Don’t stick with the same old design every time – mix it up and get attention.
  5. Design your flier to A6 (102mm x 152mm), postcard size fliers as these are easy & cheap to print. You can fit four A6 fliers on an A4.
  6. Don’t leave the design work until the last minute. Planning, creation, print and publicity is the order to work to.
  7. Avoid common design mistakes that make the flier too busy e.g. using to many different fonts, sizes or colours.
  8. Speeling mattrs. Keep proofing your work, then check it again. Once it’s printed, there’s no going back.
  9. Get a good, reliable printer. Your hard work will be wasted if it’s still sititng in the print queue come gig day.
  10. Get your work out there. It doesn’t matter how well designed it is if people don’t see it so hit the streets (and the net). Carry fliers with you to hand out to everyone you know and change your social media profile pics to reflect your latest promo.

Of course, if you’re not the designing type, it’s far easier to get a professional graphic designer to do the work for you leaving you free to shout about your gig and get the word out about your music. Get in touch with me about your project and get committed to creativity!

You know you’re a graphic designer when…

a blog for fun

Just a few signs you may be a graphic designer and not just a loony! Sourced from around the wonderful world wide internetty web type thing! [1] [2] [3]

  • You organize your CD collection according to the Pantone chart.
  • You’ve destroyed a great design idea/concept because the client thought they know best.
  • You’re up ’til 5am because you came up with the best idea ever while brushing your teeth.
  • Activating your entire font collection makes your computer crash – and you’re running OSX.
  • You see Apple products and you are like “OMG… IT’S SHINY!!!”
  • Your blood pressure increases drastically when you see someone using the Comic Sans font.
  • You HATE Comic Sans (just to be really sure!)
  • You like Helvetica but you think it is absolutely unnecessary to use it everywhere.
  • Just by the mere sight of Drop Shadow, Lens Flare and Bevel effect, you have a nervous breakdown.
  • You see a typeface in a Logo and you go, “What if…..”
  • If you lay your eyes on a board sign, you immediately start to wonder, “Is that Helvetica or Arial?”
  • You get excited when a non-designer asks you to explain your works and eventually get bugged trying to make him understand.
  • You have subscribed to nearly 50 RSS feeds.
  • You know all the shortcuts by heart and can work in Photoshop blindfolded.
  • Your Bookmark collection is begging for mercy.
  • You get seriously MAD when someone uses Typeface and Font interchangeably.
  • You get totally pissed when you realize the free Photoshop brushes you downloaded are less than 1000px in size.
  • You’ve learned your lesson and stopped using the word ‘Final’ in any file name when saving.
  • You see HTML and CSS like Neo sees the Matrix.
  • When you look at an Album art, all you see are Grunge Photoshop Brushes (you notice the album art a few minutes later).
  • You giggle whenever you use the colours F0CCED, EFF0FF and 44DDDD.
  • You maintain a grid system for your refrigerator magnets.
  • You sit at work for eight hours straight just looking at your monitor, waiting for a spark of inspiration that doesn’t come.
  • You know Lorem Ipsum by heart.
  • Looking at a menu makes you go “hmmm, ITC Baskerville italic” rather than “mmmm, lunch!”
  • “cmd + Z is the first thing you think of when you drop something.
